The best thing to help my pain is also the most annoying

Managing chronic pain is hard. Very often you avoid your pain, but cause other pains, irritations or general discomfort. In this post I have a little rant about the things that I find annoying when trying to cope with and manage my pain.

This is a sponsored post.

If you’re new to my blog, I basically have a sitting disability – I am in pain when I sit down. I have what is called coccydynia, but I no longer have a coccyx due to it being removed in 2015. Unfortunately the surgery didn’t work and I am no better off for it.

I also cause more pain (in my neck, head and shoulders) by avoiding my sitting pain, so trying to manage things can be extremely difficult and exhausting.

I can’t live my life standing and walking all day, although I do this a lot, so the best thing for me and my pain management is to lie down. I am still in pain when I do lie down, but I am in the least pain. But lying down causes other annoying things that are hard to cope with. Here are are just a few of them…

It makes me sleepy

I just want to go to sleep when I lie down. It’s the natural position we sleep in, and our bodies tend to relax when we lie down. My eyes want to close, and very often, within minutes, I’m fast asleep.

It doesn’t help that chronic pain naturally makes you more fatigued. Plus add in the mix the amount of standing and movement I do, and I’m pretty much knackered by the time I come to lie down.

I get a pain in my leg

This has only really started happening over recent months. When I lie down, especially on my right hand-side, I seem to get a dull pain inside my leg. My legs feel very restless too. I don’t know if this is because of the amount of lying down I do, or if it’s to do with the position of my spine and it’s having an impact on my muscles down my legs. But it is very annoying as it is another thing to consider as part of my overall pain management.

I often go deaf

When I lie down, I more often than not, have to lie down on my side – lying on my back still causes my pain in my coccyx area. I find that the pressure of lying down on my side causes me to sometimes go deaf, or it often feels like my ears are under water. I’m not an expert on ears by any means, but this is often to do with the build up of ear wax. I very often use earphones which is a contributing factor to ear wax. Places such as Auris Ear Care can help should you have similar ear issues.

I take up far too much space

I always feel guilty when I have to lie down and take up most of the sofa. We’ve recently bought a new corner sofa, so my partner and I have a little more room than before, but I still feel I take up too much space. Or I have to lie a certain way to be able to watch the TV. My partner is just great though, she never moans or complains, and just puts up with me sprawled out.

Sending you gentle hugs!!!! I too have coccydynia and it is truly a pain in my rear!! For years I could not sit normally for more than a few minutes. I would lie down in the car because the pain was just too much and no pain reliever helped. The best I could do was numb it with ice. After many years I did find relief in the form of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. Now I can sit all day with little discomfort. I hope you too can find relief someday. Hugs!!

Thank you Cynthia. And I’m so sorry to hear you have coccydynia too – it’s just awful isn’t it. I’ve not heard of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy before. I shall look in to that!

I’m sorry for how much pain you have to live with too.

You’re right about the ear wax build up issue. I also had severe sinusitis that was causing all sorts of horrible problems, but I learned just how interconnected different parts are around the face/ears/nose. I kept hearing a shushed heartbeat ever time I lay down for months and it drove me up the wall!

I hope you both enjoy your new sofa! I can appreciate why you’d feel you’re taking up too much space, though I’d bet my backside if the shoe were on the other foot you’d be just as she is – not caring at all how much space you take up, you just want each other to be as comfortable as possible when in pain like that.

I find that resting or pacing can be incredibly frustrating just because there’s the part of me that feels guilty and feels I should be being productive instead. Fab post, Alice. So many frustrating things when managing pain! xx
